Now you can label and bound scientific equipment that you see in FathomVerse! Here are some helpful tips for identifying equipment.

Look for:

  • Human-made equipment used for scientific purposes 🔦

  • Robotic arms 🦾

  • Vessels for collecting samples 🧪

  • Measuring instruments 🌡️

  • Not a living organism, but also not trash or rocks 🤖

Select 'Equipment' in training mode to get started!

As you can see in this video, the Schmidt Ocean Institute's ROV SuBastian can be outfitted with all kinds of equipment depending on the scientific goal of the expedition. Most ROVs are equipped with a selection of video cameras and lights. Additional equipment is commonly added when required to expand the vehicle’s capabilities. These may include sonars, magnetometers, a still camera, a manipulator or cutting arm, water samplers, and instruments that measure water clarity, light penetration and temperature.

Tips and Tricks

This is a piece of ballast used for deploying benthic equipment. We often recycle materials to be used as ballast, so the line between trash and equipment can be blurry. A short piece of (often yellow) polypropylene line is often a telltale sign it is meant to be picked up by an ROV, so it would be equipment. When unsure, there is always the “anthropogenic” umbrella mission!

Just like animals, create a separate box for each individual piece of equipment that you see in Bound.
