✍️👻 This October, find and draw the icon of the week!
Each week, starting October 1st, there will be a new badge to earn and an iconic animal to find in FathomVerse when you play Bound. As we transition into autumn and get that pumpkin spice urge to chill at home, you can play FathomVerse, the cozy game for ocean nerds!
Join the fun on FathomVerse’s Discord by sharing a drawing of this week’s icon!
October 1 Miss Princess Siphonophore
Up first: Miss Princess 👑. Her scientific name is Athorybia rosacea, and this physonect siphonophore was observed by MBARI scientists from the Bioinspiration Lab off the coast of Hawai’i! Play 3 rounds of Bound this week to see if you can find her royal highness and overall gorgeous girl, Miss Princess.

October 8 Oceanic Whitetip Shark
This week’s icon: The stunning oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus.
Play 3 rounds of Bound this week to see if you can find this icon that’s so popular, it has an entourage (fishes).
October 15 Hagfish
Happy Hagfish Day, the fall holiday you didn’t know you were waiting for! 🧙
To celebrate our slipperiest, slimiest cuties, we teamed up with our friends at Monterey Bay Aquarium to feature hagfish as our icon of the week this week! Play 3 rounds of Bound this week to earn the badge and show your love for these deep-sea jawless fish.

October 29 Jack-o-larvacean
Everyone, hail the Pumpkin King! 🎃
While we were scanning a larvacean with lasers to create a 3D model of the animal, we noticed a jack-o-lantern-like face appear for just a split second. We decided to nickname this the jack-o-larvacean as our underwater mascot for Halloween.
This week’s Drawn from the Deep icon is the larvacean. You can search for larvaceans by playing Bound in FathomVerse, and we encourage you to share your larvacean-inspired art on the FathomVerse Discord!

This larvacean was observed aboard MBARI's R/V Rachel Carson during a cruise in the Monterey Bay. In the image, Joost Daniels from the Bioinspiration Lab uses DeepPIV, an innovative imaging technology that utilizes lasers, to scan a redhead larvacean. DeepPIV is attached to ROV Ventana and enables us to capture detailed images of translucent, gelatinous animals like the larvacean, allowing us to study their structure and intricate snot palaces. Check out this MBARI video to learn more about larvaceans!
